For those of you who have read my book, this blog will explain the first three chapters. I was doing research on the internet trying to find some ideas. I have always been interested in ships sinking and the navel actions in World War II. This is probable due to my father who served in the pacific, island hopping to Japan. I found an article about some of the ships that sank right off the coast of New Jersey. After reading some of the stories, I did a deep dive and found a long article about the Rio Tercero. The ship was just hours from docking in New York when it was struck by a torpedo. The ship stayed afloat long enough for all of the sailors to get off before finally sinking. The story struck a nerve for me and I wanted to portray the sinking from both sides. It took two chapters to set the stage for the ship and the submarine crew. In chapter three I tried to give some insight on both captains humanity. Valdez managed to save all of his crew but five seamen and Linder wanted a kill but did not sink the ship with another torpedo to allow the crew a chance to abandon the ship.
